Open-air exhibition of heavy combat equipment

The museum visiting experience is enhanced by an opportunity to walk through a park with authentic military combat equipment.

Part of the permanent exhibition of the Museum of the Slovak National Army is an open-air exhibition of heavy combat equipment. It includes weapons of Czechoslovak, German and Soviet manufacture, as well as wagons of the improvised armoured train (IPV) Štefánik.

One of the rare exhibits is a machine-gun wagon from the IPV-II Hurban, built in railway workshops in Zvolen during September. The armoured train Hurban strengthened the defences of the insurgent army on the railway sections Hronská Dúbrava – Žiar nad Hronom, Banská Bystrica – Diviaky and Brezno – Červená Skala.

From the collection of german heavy machinery, the following exhibits are on display in the open-air exhibition: medium tank Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. J, German assault gun StuG. 40 Ausf. G, German infantry vehicle Sd.Kfz. 250, German medium infantry vehicle Sd.Kfz. 251 Ausf. D, and the German 10.5 cm M 18/40 field howitzer, which intervened in the fighting as assault and support assets of the Nazi infantry on all sections of the insurgent front.

From the Soviet combat equipment there are: medium tank T-34/85, 57 mm anti-tank gun model 43, 76.2 mm divisional cannon model 42, 152 mm howitzers model 37, 122 mm howitzers model 38 and 85 mm anti-aircraft gun model 44. Attention of all visitors is drawn by the Soviet transport and bomber aircraft Li-2 of the Soviet Long-Range Air Force, which provided air support to the SNU. Other heavy combat equipment includes a 7.5 cm mountain gun model 15 and 45 mm anti-tank gun model 42 – these are located in the foyer of the Museum of the SNU.

The combat equipment is located in a public space and admission is free. It is also possible to contribute a voluntary admission fee in the museum’s exhibition, which will be used for the further development of our museum.

The combat equipment is located on the grounds of the Memorial of the SNU.
