Establishment of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising

The museum was founded on 8 May 1955; however, its focus, organisational structure, and concept of its activities were not yet clear. It was not until the end of 1956 that the Directorate of Education and Culture and the regional political authorities began to address these issues. In April 1957, the museum was transferred from the jurisdiction of the Regional National Committee in Banská Bystrica to the jurisdiction of the Directorate of Education and Culture as a departmental scientific workplace. In July 1957, the Slovak Academy of Sciences granted the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising scientific status. Thus, the museum became a national and scientific institute. Its fundamental mission has been to collect, professionally process, protect, and, at the same time, make available tangible and intangible heritage from the times of the Slovak National Uprising. Exhibitions, displays, publications, and journals have become the main forms of presentation of the results of the museum’s acquisition, museological, scientific, and research activities.
