The Foundation Stone
The profile and content focus of the museum developed in the early 1960s. The essential documents were issued and the first permanent exhibition was opened. The competition for the design of the Memorial to the Slovak National Uprising took place in 1959. Nine architects took part. In 1962-1964, architect Dušan Kuzma drew up a design for the building, which was approved by the political and state authorities. Already in the phase of the primary planning, it was anticipated that it was going to be a purpose-built building of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising. At the same time, it was decided where the building would be situated. At that time, the central and regional political party authorities were very intensively monitoring the construction of the Memorial. “The building must be designed as a monumental work of art with an internal layout suited for exhibiting permanent museum collections, with adjacent spaces for collection development, and to accommodate the installation of exhibits directly on site.” The Memorial to the Slovak National Uprising, which to this day houses the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising, was opened to the public on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Uprising in 1969.
